Don’t Need Wings

Featuring Kelsey Red

It was a flickering flame
Held to the the tip of a once lit cigarette
He pulled through his lips to his veins
Thoughts traveled by train
And you could almost bob your head to the jazzy rhythm in the gentle rain
And in my mental frame
Work hadn’t had enough of him
Skipped on the mustard
Just so they could catch up to him
Chin up high
He headed out into the leagues
Fathom by fathom he turned his head whenever he wanted to breathe
And it was everything he’d need
A plaid satchel
A pair of tattered sandals
A candle
And a warm summer’s breeze
He came and went with the leaves
Pencil and a notepad
Rolled in his sleeves
Stenciled out a tote bag
To hold every dream
He could think
Or could blink
Through the eyes of an unkempt king
And on the surface it would sting
But he was pre-engaged
Didn’t even need a ring

I don’t need wings to fly away
I know that I will touch the sky someday
(I will touch the sky some day)
So gon’ n’ do what ya do
Say what ya say
Feel how ya please
Baby I’m okay
I know that I will touch the sky someday
Cuz I don’t need wings to fly away

Love came love left
Drugs stained his breath
He accepted ev-er-y insatiable step
And when the ink got smeared
He lost each secret kept but
It’s not like he forgot them
Stowed n’ maybe tucked away but not rotten
Misplaced, he was trapped in a maze of misfits who mocked him
Dropped off the future just to let the present hop in
Now he was gettin’ Mach 10
Sound was just a barrier he hadn’t knocked in
He stopped when he would cry blood
Tears trickled down his face to paint their place in the mud below
But it’s not like he would ever know
He kept his eyes wide shut
When the tides turned slow
And rolled
With the weight of the world
Restin’ on a rug
Becomin’ unfurled

I don’t need wings to fly away
I know that I will touch the sky someday
(I will touch the sky some day)
So gon’ n’ do what ya do
Say what ya say
Feel how ya please
Baby I’m okay
I know that I will touch the sky someday
Cuz I don’t need wings to fly away

Fiction fenced with fact
And though it fought ferociously the latter lay intact
And fraught with the fear of defeat
The fantasy retracted its fangs
And found its fort beneath the streets
And before it was complete
He wished it farewell
With a so long and a goodbye
And when bidded it adieu
He was sure that it would die
But to hell
No
He had a hunch that it would fly
Up above the branches
Alongside the stars
Venus to Mars
The little flame dances
Waiting for his spaceship to dance with
So the next time that you decide to inhale that cancer stick
Or ignite that cannabis
Keep in mind that that may not be the flame to be entranced with
Advance with caution
Or you could throw it to the wind
The end of a journey’s
Where another would begin

I don’t need wings to fly away
I know that I will touch the sky someday
(I will touch the sky some day)
So gon’ n’ do what ya do
Say what ya say
Feel how ya please
Baby I’m okay
I know that I will touch the sky someday
Cuz I don’t need wings to fly away
